COTUL Hosts 6th Annual Scientific Conference, Workshop, and AGM in Mwanza
The Consortium of Tanzania University and Research Libraries (COTUL) successfully held its 6th Scientific Conference, Training Workshop, and Annual General Meeting (AGM) from November 11 to 15, 2024, at the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) Hall in Mwanza.
The event brought together library and information professionals from across Tanzania, focusing on advancing the role of libraries in the digital age. It was officially opened by Prof. Peter Msoffe, Director of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST), who represented Prof. Carolyne Nombo, the Permanent Secretary of MoEST.
Addressing the 4th Industrial Revolution
The scientific conference, held on November 11–12, explored the theme “Libraries and Information Services in the 4th Industrial Revolution: Current Trends, Opportunities, and Challenges.” Delegates engaged in discussions on the integration of emerging technologies in library systems, addressing challenges, and leveraging opportunities to enhance access to information in academic and research institutions.
Following the conference, a training workshop was conducted from November 13–14, titled “Research Support Services Knowledge and Skills for Library and Information Professionals.” This hands-on workshop aimed to strengthen participants' abilities to support research activities through innovative practices and modern tools.
Election of New Leaders
The AGM, held on November 15, 2024, concluded with the election of a new leadership team to steer COTUL for the next three years. The elected officials are:
- Chairperson: Dr. Sydney Msonde
- Deputy Chairperson: Prof. Kelefa Mwantimwa
- Executive Secretary: Dr. Paul S. Muneja
- Deputy Executive Secretary: Ms. Amina Hilika
- Treasurer: Ms. Julitha Rukamata
Committee leadership roles were also filled as follows:
- Resource Mobilization Committee: Prof. Wulystan Mtega
- Information and Communication Technology Committee: Dr. Grace Msoffe
- Electronic Resources Management Committee: Mr. Siril Patrick
- Capacity Building and Public Relations Committee: Mr. Comfort Komba
Charting the Future of Libraries in Tanzania
The five-day event was a testament to COTUL’s commitment to transforming libraries and information services in Tanzania. By addressing the impact of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the conference reinforced the critical role libraries play in supporting research, education, and innovation.
The gathering emphasized collaboration among institutions, the need for capacity-building, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies to provide improved services to researchers, students, and educators. With a new leadership team in place, COTUL is poised to drive progress and innovation across Tanzania’s academic and research libraries.
